About Me
I’m Owen Fraser-Green
and I live in Oslo, Norway. I’m actually English but I emigrated in
1999 to join my wife-to-be after we met on a dancefloor in London
(actually, The Greatest Dancefloor in London, in the main arch of The
Cross, now sadly demised). I’ve missed London occasionally over the
years, chiefly for the nightlife but with two young children, that now
seems like a blast from a very distant past. Oslo’s a wonderful place
to live, especially with
children.
Besides music, cooking, photography, sailing and skiing, I enjoy computing. In fact, I have done for nearly as long as I can remember.

Like many British computer nerds of my generation, I cut my teeth on a BBC Micro Model B and I still hanker for the days of being in full control of the computer and every aspect of its operation. I learned to program BASIC and 6502 assembly language through typing programs printed in magazines. This was educational although somewhat laborious - in particular, the sprite definitions in games which consisted of long lists of numbers. It was easy to get a digit wrong resulting in a game which worked but consisted of worlds inhabited by men with detached arms who flew spaceships with patches missing and blobs sticking out. Good times!
Next came an Acorn Archimedes and I learned C programming. Around 18, I felt I’d pretty much mastered the art of programming and I wasn’t a bit afraid of telling my tutor just that on my first day at Imperial College. Unfortunately, he swiftly deflated my ego by asking me to explain functional programming to the rest of the tutor group. I’ve been trying to make up for it ever since by learning new languages, new frameworks, new methodologies and more, yet in the end, Socrates’ words ring true - the more you learn, the more you realize how little you know.
While at university I
discovered Linux and open source software and I’ve been involved in
various open source projects since then. I didn’t start working with
Linux until I joined Scali in 2005 where I became Chief Systems
Architect creating software to provision and manage Linux
clusters. Following Scali’s acquisition by Platform
Computing, I went into management and did
some freelancing before co-founding MyEnergy this year. I’m officially
CTO which, with a development team of two, means I’m back hacking.
